Large earthquake 6.7 on the Richter scale was recorded in the maritime area near the New Zealand Early Tuesday morning (25.03.2025).
The earthquake occurred in the Ocean, within walking distance of the largest southern island of New Zealand, according to the US Institute of Geological Studies (USGS) and no victims or damage have been reported.
According to the most recent data of the Institute, the earthquake occurred at 14:43 (local time; at 03:43 Greek time), In the maritime area about 160 kilometers south of the nearest village of the south island, at a relatively small focal depth of 10 kilometers. Initially, the USGS had estimated that it was 7 points, before revising its estimation at 6.8 and then at 6.7 points.

“On the basis of all the available data (…) there is no threat of tsunami” after the earthquake, according to the US Tsunami warning center in the Pacific.
