Evangelos Venizelos mentioned the need for a balance between the preservation of the values and functions of representative democracy and the benefits of technology, speaking at the conference of “Theology” magazine, Noting that the new technological landscape, brought by the internet and, lately artificial intelligence, now affects the terms of democratic governance.
Professor of Constitutional Law and former minister said that “the role of political parties is diminishing, integrated programmatic proposals lose their importance, while democratic aesthetics and historical consciousness are influenced”, estimating that the internet and public discourse worldwide are fueling populism and populism.
He stressed that this technological development is not bound by the element of territoriality, has no territory and is not subject to the control of state power, “Therefore, there is a bullet problem that has been created and which by its nature is not subject – or not easily subject – to political control, and even effective, that is, international control”.
Evangelos Venizelos warned his audience that ‘Democracy is not self -evident’stating that the decline in global representation of democracy is dramatic. As he said, There are currently 88 democracies in the world, 29 of which are liberal and 59 mere electoral, and 91 authoritarian regimes. “To speak in quantitative terms, only 900 million people, that is, almost one tenth of the world population, live under genuine democracy,” he said.
