Agia Akylina came from the village of Zagliveri, Thessaloniki and was brought up by parents of pious. Her father, however, killed a Turk after a quarrel with him. In order to avoid the punishment of death, he accepted Muslimism. But her mother remained firm in Christ and every day she taught Akylina virtue and faith. Despite her father’s persistent efforts and the threats of the Turks, Akylina did not deny Christ. When she was taken to the martyrdom, her mother was followed by her, who urged her to her. Akylina courageously controlled the Turks and their religion, resulting in a martyrdom dying, after a long day, on September 27, 1764 AD. at the age of 19.
No one knows where her fellow citizens have put her honest relic. It is said that the Turks even wanted to make it their own, so they ordered to bury St. Akylina in the Turkish cemetery near the mosque to satisfy their lime selfishness. So it happened. But the divine light, which as a star descended from heaven and stood above her grave, was the point that forced her Christian compatriots to steal her body and buried it somewhere where it would be safe. According to tradition, the names of these bold people were slaps, Kalimeris and curl, who are said to have vowed to never testify to anyone the secret, because there would be the fear of finding her holy relics in the hands of the Turks. Christians have since gone out of life with the pride of worshiping its sacred relics. Today it has been built in honor of the enclosure and a magnificent Church which, however, remains incomplete without the blessing of its saints.
