In the six -minute video, British Prime Minister Kir Starmer stressed that the recognition of the Palestinian state is a message to Israelis and Palestinians that ‘There is a prospect for a better future’.
«This solution is not reward for Hamas, because it means Hamas has no future – No place in government, no position in security, “he said.
At the same time, he called on the Israeli government “to lift the unacceptable restrictions on the border, to end these harsh tactics and to allow the humanitarian aid to be smooth.”
“With the actions of Hamas, the escalation on the Israeli side and the acceleration of settlements on the West Bank, the hope of a two -state solution is fading. But we cannot let this light go out, “Starmer said.
In closing, he underlined: “That is why we build consensus with leaders in the area and beyond that, around the context of peace we propose.”
Diplomatic bend in the context of G7
By this decision, London becomes the second member of the G7 that is taking this symbolic step. France is expected to follow in the coming days, utilizing the framework of the UN General Assembly. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney had already estimated in July that the expansion of Israeli settlements and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza made the waiting for a negotiating solution “unsustainable”. In Paris, Emmanuel Macron had stated: “Faithful to its timeless commitment to a fair and sustainable peace in the Middle East, France will recognize the Palestinian state.”
However, the French president had added that this recognition should be accompanied by Hamas’s disarmament and rebuilding Gaza.
Washington against the current
The United States, on the contrary, are categorically opposed to this initiative. President Donald Trump reiterated during his official visit to London last week his disagreement with Kir Starmer, stressing, however, stressing that their differences remain “rare”. He even pointed out a top priority: the liberation of hostages that are still held by Hamas in Gaza.
The White House has confirmed that it has no “plan” of recognition of a Palestinian state, citing the “lack of operational government” in the region.
Israel’s criticism
Although the Israeli government has not yet officially reacted to the UK decision, Benjamin Netanyahu had already condemned the possibility of such recognitions.
In a letter to Emmanuel Macron last month, he accused France of “throwing oil on the fire of anti -Semitism” and “rewarding Hamas’ terrorism”. The Israeli prime minister also accused his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese of “betraying Israel” and “abandoned” Australia’s Jewish community after Kamura’s decision to join the camp of countries recognizing the Palestinian state.
