ELSTAT: The names given by Greeks to their children since 1940

OR ELSTATreleased, the list of the most popular names For men and women with their changes per year from 1940 to 2021 when the last census was made.

The dominant names in Greece, according to the results of the 2021 population-host census of the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT), are an example of the preference of parents in our country for the last 80 years.

Based on the data presented in two detailed videos from ELSTAT, the 30 most popular female and male names for each year of birth are recorded as a percentage of people born in Greece that year and belong to the permanent population with Greek or Greek and other citizenship.

The most popular female names

Young parents may put aside the most… traditional names like Maria, but it seems that this is not enough to drop the popular name from its primacy, as it remains steadily first and in 2021 in parents’ choices with 7.71%.

Helen and Katerina are the next, with Joanna, now in 4th place, showing a significant 10 -seat rise since 1940. The five is closing the name Vassiliki.

The most popular male names

As for the male names, first could not be other than George who, even with a drop of about 3 points since 1940, still maintains first place.

Constantine, Yiannis, Dimitris and Nikolas, complement the top five, which has been in the top choices of parents for many decades.

With some new additions more… alternative names being observed in recent years by parents, the question of many is how the list of the most popular names will change and how long they will still keep the first for many years, the so -called traditional names in our country.
