Kyriakos Mitsotakis: “The aim is to create a Ministry of Research and Higher Education”

The prime minister stressed that the goal is to create a ‘Unified Research Area’as the system today is fragmented, with research centers and universities not communicating as much as they should. “It is clear that these two spaces do not communicate the way they should,” he admitted.

This, he said, will provide stability and predictability to the research community, with funding being done with strictly meritocratic criteria and performance evaluation.

Mr. Mitsotakis also linked the research with national securitypointing out that “a new space is emerging in terms of technological innovation around the defense sector”. He cited as an example the creation of the Hellenic Center for Defense Innovation (ELKAK), which can fund innovative defense projects.
