Electricity: The rise of wholesale in September and scenarios to tax outstanding to suppliers

Rise 20 euros is observed in the first fortnight of September at price wholesale of powerin relation to the levels of August.

Specifically, the wholesale price is now at € 94.5/MWh from 73 euros last month. In the early days of the Energy Stock Exchange, there were prices of more than 90 euros for nine of the first 14 days of the month, which significantly raise the average of electricity.

While demand is reduced on a monthly basis, the most perceived difference is the rise of natural gas to the power mix, which for some days exceeded RES and became a first source. At the same time, several days have entered the daily market lignite units that also raise the cost.

It remains to be seen what the picture will be in the second half of September, in order to form the final average price that will determine the retail invoices. However, if the voltage so far continues, suppliers are likely to increase their charges, after the large 25% reductions they made this month.

In any case, the exact levels of new invoices will not go unnoticed by the RIS and Maximus. From the TIF step, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said he would not be tolerated in retail and that the invoices paid by consumers would have to reflect wholesale prices.

Exactly how this translates into practice is remains to be seen. The government has warned with severe punishment in the event that it is finding profanity phenomena. The menu of potential measures include taxation of superstar, although some duration of suppliers’ behavior should first be determined. Also, in such a case, new research would probably be needed by the Independent Authorities that would show specific numbers and sizes per company.
