The government’s legislative priorities in the field of justice were presented by the Minister of Justice, the Minister of Justice, George Floridisspeaking yesterday (12/9) at the start of Plenary of the Presidents of Bar Associations of the country, in Ancient Olympia.
Mr Floridis, making a brief account of his two -year cooperation with the Bar, emphasized that they had proceeded with significant institutional pending issues, while spending extensively in subsequent legislative interventions.
The Code of Lawyers
The minister made it clear that no change would take place without the consent of the lawyers, stressing the need to modernize the profession.
“The job, the profession, the function of lawyers must be modernized after years and enter the new era (…) There is no way to proceed with the change in the Code of Lawyers without their partnership,” he said.
The new inheritance law
By the end of the year, new inheritance law is expected to be passed, “after 80 years,” as Mr Floridis said, noting that the proposal will provide solutions to modern problems and strengthen society.
Code of alternative forms of dispute resolution
For the spring of 2026 the Minister determined the adoption of the new Code of Alternative forms of Dispute Settlement, with a complete abolition of the existing framework.
“The whole legislative framework will be abolished (…) will be a new code, which must be a separate lesson in the Law Schools,” he said, emphasizing the role of lawyers in the process.
Changes to administrative justice
At the same time, he announced interventions in the administrative procedure and redistribution of the country’s administrative courts.
Transfer of court
The minister made a special reference to the transfer of powers by judges to lawyers, stressing that the aim is to serve the citizens and to upgrade the role of the lawyer as a “independent officer of justice”.
Criminal Code and impunity
Concerning the changes in the Criminal Code, Mr Floridis stressed that the aim was to send a clear message to society against the “sense of impunity” which, he said, “dominated for decades” by leading to “saving our criminal system”.
