Belgium will recognize the Palestinian state – announces sanctions against Israel

Another diplomatic milestone: his foreign minister BelgiumMaxim Prevo, wrote via X on Tuesday morning (02.09.2025) that “the Palestinian state will be recognized by Belgium at the UN Summit”. This decision will be accompanied by forced labor measures targeted by his government Israel.

Beyond the recognition of Palestinian stateTwelve sanctions against Israel are foreseen: Prohibition of importing products coming from Israeli settlements, potential judicial prosecutions, overflows and transfers, as well as a ban on Belgium entry for two Israeli far -right ministers, several violent and violent bishops.

This harsh attitude adopted by the Brussels government is far from gathering widespread consensus. Inside the federal alliance, the right-wing N-VA and MR parties express strong reservations, believing that such measures are at risk of isolating Belgium on the international stage. Supporters of recognition oppose that this is a powerful message in favor of the solution of the two states and international law.

At the end of July, Emmanuel Macron had already announced that France would proceed with a corresponding recognition at the same General Assembly, which will take place from September 9th to September 23rd in New York. More than ten western countries also called on their partners to follow this step. Today, almost three-quarters of UN member states are already recognizing the Palestinian state, which was declared by the Palestinian leadership in exile in the late 1980s.
