Brittle alliance
Following the departure of the loud parties in July, Netanyahu no longer has an absolute majority in Knesset and depends on his far -right allies, who are categorically opposed to any truce with Hamas. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotric even threatened to leave the government if an agreement was signed.
On the contrary, an alliance between Likund (32 seats), the central party of Lapid (24 seats), the nationalist Israeli Beynnu of Lieberman (8 seats) and Gads (8 seats) could secure a majority of 72 seats. However, observers find it unlikely that Netanyahu will accept this scenario.
Gandle’s appeal
Benny Gads stressed: “It is our duty to save the lives of the hostages, they could be our sons and daughters.” According to him, about fifty prisoners are still being held in Gaza, of which about twenty are estimated to be alive. After their release, new elections could be held in the spring of 2026.
Although he asked for a limited truce with Hamas, Gads made it clear that he was not ending the end of the war: “Hamas’s terrorists have to die like the Nazis, but above all we have to save our brothers.” He also added that such a government should adopt a law that will also impose military service on the overt Orthodox Jews, who are traditionally excluded.
Demonstrations in Tel Aviv
On Saturday night, tens of thousands of Israelis demonstrated again in Tel Aviv demanding the end of the war and an agreement on hostages. “Instead of saving lives, Netanyahu condemns captives to death and leads us to an eternal, futile war,” said Yotal Cohen, whose brother is being held in Gaza.
Relatives of hostages recalled that their children have been captive for 687 days. Some have called on the prime minister to immediately accept the latest 60 -day ceasefire proposal, which has already been approved by Hamas, and providing for the liberation of Israelis – alive and dead – in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.
Uncertain new negotiations
On Thursday night, Netanyahu announced that he had called for “immediately” to reopen the discussions about “the liberation of all hostages and end the war in terms of Israel.” However, he did not refer to the mediators’ proposal and the government has not yet confirmed the mission of negotiators for a new circle of talks.
