The art of stone revives in Grevena

In beauty Grevenaa model of folk architecture, a three-day stone workshop was held to rescue the art of stone. The event, attended by teachers, students of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) and the University of Thessaly, as well as local masters, aimed to highlight the architectural heritage of the area, learning traditional techniques and understanding of traditional techniques.

The traditional art of stone processing, known by the “stone pelicans” who built elaborate bridges, churches and houses, is in danger of being lost due to the lack of specialized craftsmen. This laboratory was a significant effort to bridge the knowledge gap between older and younger generations.

As Greveniotis Master Athanasios Poravos, who has also participated in the restoration of the Plaka Bridge, pointed out, there is an urgent need to have new talents that will keep this cultural heritage alive. The workshop has offered students the opportunity to get to know the techniques of housing, roofs and cobblestones in a scientific way, as well as ways of decorating stone buildings.
