West Nile virus: 2 dead and a total of 47 cases in our country – which municipalities are threatened most

2 people lost their lives in our country by West Nile virus. Only in the last week 12 patients were diagnosed with the dangerous infection caused by infected mosquitoes, thus launching cases in Greece.

The West Nile virus seems to spread rapidly in our country. The 2 patients who died were over 78 years old, had been severely ill, presenting events from the Central Nervous System (CNS).

On the week of August 13-20, 2025, 12 patients were diagnosed with the virus. Thus, the total number of domestic cases (including dead) this year reached 47. Of these patients, these patients, only 6 had mild symptoms.

Everyone else had CNS events (including the brain and spinal cord) and most importantly:

  • Encephalitis or
  • Aseptic meningitis or
  • Meningoencephalitis

All patients so far needed hospitalization. The two of them, as mentioned above, lost their lives. Others 34 have been dischargedwhile the rest 11 are still hospitalized. Of these, 2 are hospitalized in an intensive care unit (ICU).

People who have been sick this year from West Nile virus are age from 28 to 92 years. Their average age is 74 years.

However, the 47 cases are not the only ones caused by the virus in our country. In each with CNS events, they match other 140 that were asymptomatic or had mild symptoms And so they did not address the doctors.
