Gerapetrites in Syrian Foreign Ministry: Commitment or Including Governance, no ethnic and religious community be excluded

‘The Foreign Minister, George Gerapetritismet in Athens today, Wednesday, August 20th, with the transitional Minister of Foreign Affairs and Officer of the Arab Republic Syria, Assad al -Sibani.

The two officials noted that today’s meeting was an important opportunity to strengthen bilateral relations, with the ultimate goal of upgrading them, in a fragile geopolitical context, given the developments in the Middle East and the Eastern Mediterranean. They also discussed the provision of the Greek side of know -how to build institutions and promote cooperation in the field of immigration with the establishment of technical committees.

Mr Gerapetritis emphasized that Greece consistently supports Syria’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity and reiterated the need to comply with the transitional Syrian administration for an inclusive governance, without external intervention, which should not be excluded.

In addition, it reiterated Greece’s undiminished interest in protecting Christian populations in Syria and the criticality of keeping open communication between the Syrian transitional government and the Patriarchate of Antioch, as an institution that protects and promotes Damascus’ relations with the Greek and Greek.
He also pointed out the importance of commitment to international law, in particular, international law of the sea, as well as respect for the sovereign rights of neighboring states.

Messrs. Gerapetritis and Al-Shabani confirmed their willingness to promote regional cooperation with the establishment of a tripartite-shaped format with the participation of the Republic of Cyprus, with a possible first meeting, at the level of Foreign Ministers, next September, at the 80th New York Council.
