Personal Number: The deadline for issuing it – all you need to know

A few days are left for those who wish to issue their own Personal numberwhich will accompany them all their lives in all transactions with the public sector and in the second year with the private sector.

According to what has been announced from the first day of operation of the digital key, the Friday September 5thall those who have not issued a personal number will automatically receive it from the system so that all Greek citizens are holders of the unique identification number.

A number that will gradually replace the multiple numbers used today, such as the Social Security Registry number (AMKA), the tax register number (ID) and the ID number, will be automatically attributed to all those who did not comply with its issuance.

The personal number, which is a new digital identity for Greek citizens, is gradually introduced as a key identifier in the digital world, but without immediately abolishing AMKA or VAT. This new number is already listed on new identities, both on their back and on digital identity through the application gov.gr walletdemonstrating its utility as the only and main identification of every citizen on the Internet and in electronic transactions with the State and, soon, with the private sector.

The personal number will initially concern mainly the transactions with the publichowever, its expansion into transactions with private sector bodies, such as Banks and Insurance Companiesit is considered a given, in order to reduce the need for multiple identification numbers and simplify processes.

Its performance is done through the digital platform myInfo of Gov.gr, where citizens have the ability to actively participate in its formation, choosing two of the three of the three alphanumeric elements which will precede their VAT. The third element occurs automatically from the system, acting as a check digit. The form of the personal number is 12 digits, with a structure consisting of three alphanumeric elements, the VAT and the control digit. Specifically, two of the three alphanumeric elements, which complement the whole, are selected by the citizen, while the third is automatically produced by the system, ensuring its credibility and uniqueness.

All the steps

The personal number is characterized by a permanent and unchanging nature, which means that it never changes, regardless of change in identity, address or other register. For example, even if a citizen changes the name or accommodation, the personal number attributed to him remains stable throughout his lifethus offering a reliable and timeless identification.

Its issuance process is done through application myInfowhich requires the entry with their Taxisnet codes and a registered mobile number in the National Communication Registry (EMP)ensuring safe access and protection of personal data.

The process is simple and transparent. After entering the application via TAXISnet codes, citizens will try Double identification through OTPallowing them to see and confirm their details in state registers. If they find inaccuracies, they may apply for correction, either directly through the Myinfo platform or to the competent KEPs or other services. Then it becomes Automatic synchronization of registers And the personal number is issued, which, as mentioned, remains stable throughout the life of the citizen.

In addition, the platform provides the Ability to submit correction requests If inaccuracies are identified, thereby ensuring the accuracy and updating of public registries. Citizens can request corrections both through the myinfo digital application and addressing the competent KEPs, public services or consular authorities when abroad. This procedure contributes to avoiding double or incorrect identification and promotes the effectiveness and reliability of the public data management mechanism.

For some groups of citizens, specific procedures for the issuance of the personal number are provided. For example, minor children will get the number through the parent or guardian, either through the Myinfo platform or in KEPs. Citizens without access to Taxisnet or mobile phone, as well as judicial supporters, will be able to obtain a personal number with a physical presence in a postal or consular store, submitting the necessary supporting documents and identifying themselves.

Recall that from Sunday, June 29, 2025, for the completion of the Identity Bulletin issuance, it is a prerequisite for the applicant – if he is a beneficiary – to have a personal number. According to an ELAS announcement, this rule excludes cases of citizens who have taken the necessary steps of issuing a personal number, but the procedure was not completed without their fault.

For further information and assistance in the process, citizens can visit the official website of the Ministry of Digital Governance or addressing the Citizens’ Centers (KEPs), where they will receive support and detailed guidance.

By adopting personal number, the government aspires to upgrade digital governance, facilitating the transactions and identification of citizens, while increasing the security and protection of their personal data in an ever -evolving digital environment.
