The funding of projects in Greece through the pension fund was discussed at a meeting of the President of the Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry (EBEA), Giannis Bratakou, with her ambassador AustralianAlison Duncan, in the context of financial support for the two countries’ relations.
According to a statement from the EBEA, the debate highlighted the need for a strategic approach, with both sides recognizing the need for a significant increase in bilateral trade and investment. At the same time, the Australian ambassador emphasized the possibility of financing major investment projects in Greece through the $ 3.5 billion pension fund, which can support investments in high growth prospects, such as renewable energy sources and tourism.
The absence of free trade agreement (FTA) was characterized as a major obstacle, with particular reference to the difficulties facing Greek food exports to Australia. In this regard, the importance of reviving the FTA negotiations, with an emphasis on Australia’s access to the European Agricultural Market.
Mr Bratakos referred, inter alia, to the need to increase the tourist flow and the creation of targeted Greek tourism promotion actions in Australia, with Mrs Duncan referring to the possibility of a direct Athens-Australia airline.
In addition, the investment opportunities presented by our country, in particular in the sectors of tourism, renewable energy and real estate, were discussed, with particular reference to student housing investments. At the same time, the possibility of investment in Australia was discussed by Greek companies, especially in the field of minerals, renewable energy and shipping.
The EBEA president stressed that Australia is an important market for Greece and there is a significant room for strengthening our economic relations. “At today’s meeting with the Australian ambassador we have seen a common will to strengthen economic relations between the two countries, with an emphasis on increasing trade, investment and tourism. Australia is an important market for Greece and there is great potential for further development of our cooperation. We will work closely with the Ambassador and the Government to take advantage of these opportunities, remaining loyal to the EBEA’s vision to strengthen international business relations. “
