Turkey’s announcement on Creating two marine parks in international waters of the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean sparked a strong reaction from Greece. The Foreign Ministry described the action as “unacceptable, unilateral and illegal”, stressing that it does not produce any legal effect and is a lack of respect for international law.
The Turkish movement comes a few days after Athens’ announcement on its own national maritime parks. Turkey, with the demarcation of parks, challenges the sovereign rights of Greek islands, such as Samothrace, Lemnos and Kastelorizo, and seeks to impose its revisionist positions.
On the part of the opposition, PASOK, and SYRIZA, they condemned the energy.
PASOK stressed that national sovereignty is not negotiable and called on the government to directly internationalize the issue in European and international institutions.
PASOK: “Dangerous escalation of Turkish energy with marine parks”
SYRIZA spoke of Ankara’s “illegal energy” and “reviewing narrative”.
SYRIZA: “Dangerous degradation of Turkish challenges by the government”
Government circles, such as MP Angelos Syrigos, said Turkish announcements are limited to international waters and have no substantive legal consequences, but are merely an attempt by Turkey to maintain its claims.
