Nearly two months after returning to the White House, US President Donald Trump has triggered a trade war with China, Canada, Mexico and the EU. Trump also threatens with mutual duties in every country taxing US imports with these duties.
China quickly responded with countermeasures in February and in March when two tariff packages were imposed by Trump. And Beijing is widely expected to respond quickly to April duties if they come into force.
“In response to US duties, US trade partners will not be left with arms,” the Chinese tabloid Global Times says in today’s opinion article. “High duties with US exports could be an option for many countries,” the article writes.
Beijing has imposed a retaliation for US exports of agricultural products and foods, exports and investment restrictions on 25 US companies, and has suspended soy import licenses to three US companies and has freezed timber imports from the US.
China has also begun research on some US fiber optical products.
In order to help foreign companies based in China to withstand “exogenous shocks”, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce will take a number of measures to help them expand sales in the country, according to Yuyuan Tantian, a social media account linked to the CCTV state network.
“Many countries are looking for other economic partnerships to reduce their dependence on the US by concluding new trade alliances,” the Global Times wrote.
