An account of parliamentary work was presented by his MEP PASOK and Vice -President of the Socialist and Democrats Group at European parliament Giannis Maniatison the occasion of completing one year after taking up his duties.
The MEP in the annual project report (see HERE) He mentions, among other things, that he made 830 interventions, 48 plenary speeches, while attending 135 committees and asked 35 written questions.
In his message he states:
“It has been a year since the day that with your honorary vote I was elected a member of the European Parliament. It has already passed a year, in one of the most difficult times of the EU. A year full of catalytic geopolitical events, conflicts, wars and upheavals. At the same time, developments in Greece have led to a much worse position of our homeland in terms of its credibility to European authorities, while there were significant concessions to issues of national sovereign rights.
I have always believed that the leading political initiative of a people elected by the people must be accountable at regular intervals, so that citizens know how it has highlighted and defended the interests of society and the homeland it represents.
In the “Edition” you hold, I have recorded my most important initiatives, both as a member of various European Parliament committees, and as a scientist defending international conferences and media, the principles and values of Europe and Greece’s peoples and pride.
At the beginning of this parliamentary period, my other 135 colleagues Socialists and Democrats MEPs honored me with my election as Vice -President with responsibilities in international relations, European defense and international energy cooperation and security. Perhaps the most demanding “portfolio” that a MEP could take over in conditions of systemic geopolitical turbulence and conflict, energy crisis, redesign US-EU defense relations in NATO. It was, along with the claim of funds and regulations for Greece, at the same time, at the same time, as Vice-President of the second largest European Parliament, to handle extremely sensitive and complex geopolitical situations, from the Russian-Ukraine war and the Middle East.
Particularly honored was my choice by the ITRE Committee (Energy, Industry, Research) as a rapporteur for the EDIP folder – European Defense Industry, the first dossier to launch the foundations of a coherent European technological and defense infrastructure, in which I hope Greece will participate.
At the same time, the specific issues of national interest, such as the Israeli – Cyprus – Crete cable, the illegal Turkolibyan memorandum, the hydrocarbon surveys, the Agia Catherine Sinai Monastery, the terrorist attack on the Greek Orthodox Church in Damasko.
I hope that this first year was worthy of the expectations you had since my election.
Numbers are the most unmistakable witnesses. Over 830 interventions of all kinds, within one year. Certainly many more could and should be done.
I hope next year the report is even more creative. Good summer.
