The forthcoming municipal elections find Greece with a radically renewed institutional framework as new Code of Local Government has now been fully implemented. The initiative, presented to the Council of Ministers by Interior Minister Theodoros Livanos, and announced by government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis, aims to update, codify, modernize and simplify the multidimensional legislative framework.
The most crucial change introduced by the code is the Conducting municipal and regional elections in a single roundthrough the introduction of its system supplementary vote. This reform aspires to solve chronic pathogens of the electoral process in local government.
This change has multiple, strategic goals. First of all, it is expected to encourages the increase in participation Citizens in the electoral process, as the abolition of the second round simplifies the process and possibly reduces the fatigue of voters. Second, focusing on a single round is estimated to lead to more noun and complete discussions during the pre -election period.

Candidates, knowing that their election is judged in a single match, will be forced to present more clear and comprehensive proposals, thus creating a more meaningful pre -election dialogue. Third, and perhaps most importantly, the removal of the second round puts Finally in the negotiations and collaborations of the “last -minute”the so -called “bazaars”, which often took place between the first and second rounds of the elections.
This new electoral system is particularly interesting in cases such as that of Mayor of Athens, Harry Dukewhich in the previous elections needed wide collaborations in the second round to prevail. With the new Code, such partnerships must have been formed and perceived by the electorate before the first (and only) ballot box, as the election will be fully judged by the first vote of the citizens. This pushes candidates and factions to clearer alliances and election strategies, enhancing transparency and political responsibility.
