In today’s meeting Ministerial councilthe Minister of the Interior, Theodore Lebanesepresented his plan Code of Local Government. As the government spokesman announced Paul Marinakisthe new Code aims to update, codify, modernize and simplify the existing, complex legislative framework.
One of the most important reforms introduced by the code is the Conducting municipal and regional elections in a single round. To achieve this, the system of supplementary vote.
This change has multiple goals. First, it is expected to encourage more citizens to participate in the electoral process, as conducting a round helps to increase participation. Secondly, focusing on a round can lead to more meaningful and comprehensive discussions during the pre -election period, creating a more meaningful pre -election dialogue. Thirdly, the abolition of the second round will end the negotiations and partnerships that often took place between the first and second rounds of the elections, ending the so -called “bargains”.
The new Code of Local Government aspires to modernize the functioning of self -government, making it more effective and transparent.
