We made progress, the process will continue, says Guterres after Pentameri for the Cyprus issue

Progress has been made in four of the confidence -building measures, UN Secretary -General Antonio Guterres said in his statements after the Pentamery Conference in New York. As he pointed out, there is an agreement on a new meeting plus another in the future.

The Secretary General thanked the conference participants, who came as a continuation of the Geneva Conference.

Today’s discussions were constructive, as he said. He added that progress was made for four of the MOEs, saying that he is close to the issue of derogation.

Guterres also referred to new measures and new initiatives.

Finally, the Secretary -General’s official meeting with the two leaders and a second at a later stage was agreed.

Such steps show a commitment to continue the dialogue for the benefit of Cypriots, he said.

Asked if it is a start for new negotiations, the Secretary -General said there are significant difficulties and that the road is long, but this process must continue. He would like to see more to agree.

It’s a complex issue, but I think we made progress, step by step, this process will continue, the Secretary General said.
