The imposition of 30% duty on products imported from Mexico to the US by August 1, announced earlier today (12/7/25) by the US President Donald Trump In a letter posted on his platform on social media.
US President Donald Trump’s threat to impose a 30% duty on products from the European Union since August 1st, is a negotiations tactic, three European officials told Reuters.
The EU’s readiness to continue working for an agreement until August 1, but at the same time to adopt proportional countermeasures if needed, European Commission President Ursula von der Laien points out in a statement today, after the announcement of the US.
The entire statement by the Commission Chairman is as follows:
“We note the letter sent by US President Trump, describing a revised tariff rate and a new timetable. The imposition of 30% duties on EU exports would have distributed basic transatlantic supply chains to the detriment of businesses, consumers and patients on both sides of the Atlantic.
Few economies in the world are open and maintain fair commercial practices at the level of the European Union. The EU has steadily prioritized a solution after negotiating with the US, which reflects our commitment to dialogue, stability and a constructive transatlantic partnership. We remain ready to continue working for an agreement until August 1st.
At the same time, we will take all necessary measures to protect EU interests, including adopting analog countermeasures, if necessary. In the meantime, we continue to deepen our global partnerships, based firmly on the principles of rules -based international trade. “
