In studying a study proceeds with Ministry of Development To formulate the new Independent Market Supervisory and Protection Authority Consumer projected to be put into operation by 2026.
In the framework of the Operational Program “TEA Ministry of Development-Action: Commerce Support and Consumer Protection 2021-2025”, and in particular in ‘Priority Axis 6.1’ Administrative Support ‘, the project is implemented entitled’ Study of Strategic Direction and Institutional Reflection ‘.
As stated in the relevant decision of the Minister of Development Takis Theodorikakos, a study will be carried out and a proposal will be carried out that will contribute to the formation of a cohesive strategic direction framework for the modernization of the consumer’s lawyer, taking into account the needs of the consumer, the specifics of the European market. The main aim is to enhance the effectiveness of the institution, in order to meet the increased market supervision and protection needs, in accordance with the best European practices. The study will take into account, analyze and evaluate the existing situation, identify challenges and opportunities for improvement and include proposals for political, administrative or organizational nature that could support a more active and functional institution.
The expiry date of the act is the end of December 2025.
It is recalled that, according to the planning of the Ministry of Development, the new Independent Market Supervision and Consumer Protection Authority will be fully operational within the first half of 2026.
As Minister of Development Takis Theodorikakos has noted in his statements, the government is following optimal practices from abroad, such as the cases of Sweden, Denmark and Italy, as well as ours, such as AADE.
In a single authority, he explained, all the responsibilities will unite, clarifying who is doing what, beyond the political circle with a 5 -year term, governor and three deputy governors incorporating the relevant Directorates of the General Secretariat of Commerce, DIMEA and Consumer Ombudsman.
In seeking simplification of processes, strengthening controls and faster service to the citizen, the new authority will have audit, ratification and reconciliation responsibilities, and citizens will know where and to whom to address.
The responsibilities of the new Authority will cover a wide range of: mediation and resolution of differences between citizens and businesses, conducting controls and imposing sanctions, forming policies and suggestions to the state and, more generally, support for consumers and the enhancement of the relevant culture in society.
The funding of the body will come from the state budget, European programs, fees, and will also provide for revenue from the administrative fines imposed.
It is noted, as the Minister of Development Takis Theodorikakos has clarified that “the new Authority is not confused with the Competition Committee, which remains responsible for dealing with cartels”.
