Wide meeting was held at noon at Ministry of Immigration and Asylumin the face of the management of increased migratory flows to Crete. The meeting, under the Minister of Migration and Asylum Thanos Plevris, was attended by the Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection and MP of Rethymno Yiannis Kefalogiannis, as well as the Deputy Minister of Immigration and Asylum and Chania MPs, Sevou Marinakis.
Mr Plevris presented the interventions that have already been launched to condemn the situation, noting that the government has activated specific measures of deterrence, surveillance and reception, to shield local communities, with full respect for the country’s international obligations.
Crete cannot be converted into a field of management
Minister Kefalogiannis reiterated the need for close coordination with the local government and stressed that Crete could not be transformed into a field of management without a specific plan and an equal distribution of responsibilities. As he noted: “Treating such phenomena requires seriousness, institutional cooperation and foresight. We cannot work retrospectively.
Solutions are needed to protect the social fabric and honor the history and role of Crete. “In the context of the meeting, there was information to create an appropriate structure of reception and identification of immigrants in Crete, which will meet the necessary human hospitality standards without – at this stage.
Broader pattern
On the part of both the responsible Minister Mr. Plevris and Mr. Kefalogiannis, it was emphasized that the phenomenon of increased pressure on the coast of Crete is part of a broader motif of tooling of migration than international circuits, as has happened in Italy, Italy, Spain, Spain, Spain. The ministry notes that the country’s response remains stable: national strategy, institutional coordination and complete preventing any attempt to exploit the phenomenon.
The meeting also raised the issue of systematic financial support for Local Government in order to cover increased costs of feeding, hosting and managing the emergencies that have recently arisen in Crete.
