South Korea: Police raid the presidency – Former defense minister attempted suicide

A week after her leader’s attempt South Korea Yoon Sok-gel to proceed with the imposition of martial law in the country, a special unit of her police announced today (11.12.2024) that it conducted an investigation at the premises of the presidency.

South Korea’s special police unit raided and searched “the presidential office,” “the police headquarters,” “the Seoul Metropolitan Police Headquarters” as well as the “parliamentary security agency” premises, according to her announcement received by AFP, without further clarification.

Former South Korean Defense Minister Kim Jong-hyun, in office when martial law was announced a week ago, which however lasted only a few hours, attempted suicide in a detention center, South Korea’s national Yonhap news agency reports.

According to the information of the agency, Mr. Kim made the attempt shortly before his arrest was officially announced for his role in declaring martial law on the night of December 3-4. He resigned last Thursday, the day after the measure was withdrawn under pressure from parliament and thousands of protesters.
