Republican -controlled US Senate voted in favor of starting the debate over the sweeping bill Reduction of the President’s Tax and Expenditure Donald Trumpin a basic, procedural, vote late last night (28.6.2025), increasing the chances of legislators being able to pass on his “big, beautiful bill” in the coming days.
Trump’s basic legislative objective passed the first procedural obstacle with 51 votes in favor and 49 against, with two Republican senators voting against it.
The result came after several hours of negotiation as Republican leaders and Vice President Jay Di Vance tried to persuade three Republican senators who appeared opposed, in a series of discussions of closed doors.
The procedural vote – which would begin the debate on the big 940 -page bill on the funding of Trump’s key priorities on immigration, borders, tax cuts and the army – began after hours of delays.
Trump was watching the process from the oval office late last night, a high -ranking White House official said.
“This evening we saw a big victory in the Senate, with the” big, beautiful bill “,” Trump commented via a post on Truth Social.
The bill provides for the extension of 2017 tax cuts, which was Trump’s main legislative achievement during his first presidential term, reducing other taxes and boosting the spending on the Army and border security.
Chuck Sumer, the leader of the minority of the Democrats in the Senate, demanded that the bill be read before the process of discussing, stressing that Republicans are trying to get through an urgent “radical bill”.
“If the Senate Republicans do not say to the American people what this bill contains, then the Democrats will force this body to read it, from beginning to end,” he said.
