Marinakis in the European Parliament: Investment in the Republic The protection of journalism

As part of the meetings organized by the Member States by the European Parliament’s DRFMG/Libe Committee, a hearing today with Greece, in which the Deputy Minister under the Prime Minister and a government spokesman participated, in which the Undersecretary of State participated. Representatives of all Eurograts met in two separate closed doors with both representatives of agencies and independent authorities and state representatives, which were still involved by the Deputy Minister of Justice, Giannis Bougas and the Prime Minister’s Secretary -General, Stelios Koutnatzis.

During the meeting, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs presented the moves that Greece has made in alignment with European standards:

• On the issue of the protection of journalists, referring to the creation of the Task Force and the International Center for Education for the Security of Journalists, the abolition of simple defamation, the establishment of a particular offense for the threats of sports.

• To strengthen transparency in the issues of ownership status and media funding through the recent law passed in Parliament, and the new framework for the selection of public media administrations that ensures even greater transparency and good administration.

He also referred to the subsequent promoted reforms, such as licensing radio stations and regional television channels, as well as further harmonization with the provisions of the European Press Freedom Regulation (EMFA).

Pavlos Marinakis stressed that the protection of journalism and the shielding of institutions are not just compliance. It is a substance choice, it is an investment in democracy and the security of people who serve information is non -negotiable for the Greek state.
