Emergency question Farantouri in Brussels for the bomb attack on an Orthodox church in Damascus

Emergency question to the EU’s High Representative Mrs. Kaya Kalas, submitted today by EU MEP and a member of the European Parliament Security and Defense Committee, Professor Nicolas Farantourisregarding the dramatic events of religious fundamentalism that took place on Sunday (22/6) at Damascus and led to the murder of dozens of Greek -Orthodox of Syria.

Suicide bomber, a member of the Islamic State, shot and then was blown up inside the Church of Prophet Elias Damascus During the Sunday operation, killing dozens of Greek Orthodox.

“I’m overwhelmed. I know the church of Prophet Elias in Damascus. I contacted the Greek community last night and friends of Greek Orthodox in Syria. Communities of uninterrupted presence of 2500 thousand years are at risk of extinction. They live in a state of terrorism and fear. Things are out of control and I had warned about it, “Nicolas Farantouris said late Sunday night on social media

The Greek MEP complains that yesterday’s massacre is yet another bloody episode of violence on the ongoing attacks on schools, churches, public and private spaces under the tolerance or guidance of the new Islamist regime of Damascus and calls for the intervention of the European Union.

“I warned of what is happening and what is going to follow. Both during my visit to Damascus March 7-8 that I saw with my eyes the slaughter of thousands of Alawites and Christians, and all the next time, “said Nikolas Farantouris.

In his urgent question, the Greek MEP calls on the High Representative and Vice President of the European Commission:

(a) to move to the Damascus delegation of European officials to Damascus,
b) To be sent immediately to Syria Inspectorate in order to record the attacks and atrocities, and

(c) Immediately review the framework for cooperation and lifting of the EU’s sanctions on the Damascus government and to require the Jolani regime to hold an election with a specific timetable.

Appeal to the Greek Government

“I call on the Greek government to act now, abandon departure and take serious initiatives to stop the massacre at the expense of the Greek Orthodox and every national and religious community in Syria,” notes Nicolas Farantouris.

At the same time, it calls on the Greek state “to send to the Embassy of Greece in Damascus, executives of the Security Forces, to evaluate the situation in the field and to inform the government and European institutions in detail.”

Finally, Mr. Farantouris calls on Athens “to immediately organize a mixed inter -party mission to Damascus by members of the Greek and European Parliament to assess the situation and to say in the Jolani regime that there can be no tolerance for continuing massacres”.

And he concludes: “They look forward to Greece in their second home for support. Greece has to come forward to Europe and around the world and demand the respect of human rights in Syria as a prerequisite for Brussels-Damascus relations. “

The Islamist regime Jolani

The fall of the Assad regime in late 2024 was succeeded by the rise of Al Jolani (Al Sarah). Al-Sara is a former member of Al-Qaeda and his organization (HTS) is staffed by jihadists and fanatical Islamists, coming from countries such as Turkey, Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan. With his rise to power, he began persecution and slaughter against the Alawites and Christians on the Mediterranean coast, in cities such as Laodicea and Tarsus.

Nikolas Farantouris asked a question to the European Commission on January 23, calling for Damascus to commit to the European Union regarding the protection of national and religious communities.

Then went to Damascus on March 8-9on the days of the slaughter of thousands of Alawites and Christians, where he met with the Greek community, Patriarch of Antioch Ioannis I, with representatives of communities, as well as with transitional government officials.

During his stay in Syria, he recorded the rise of violence and extremism and attacks on cities and neighborhoods of Alawites and Christians under the guidance or tolerance of the Jolani regime. After the fall of Assad EU and the US, they decided to lift the sanctions on Damascus, which is subject to respect for the religious and national communities of Syria.
