Supermarkets: The profit ceiling is extended until April 30, 2025 – What the bill provides in detail

The extension of six measures (among them the ceiling on the profit margin on basic consumer goods sold by supermarket) provides a provision bill which was filed today (9.12.2024) by the Ministry of Development in the Parliament.

The extension of the measures based on the development ministry’s bill will last until April 30, 2025, which means it covers the Easter period, when households have increased purchases from supermarkets.

Specifically, the draft law of the Ministry of Development provides that until April 30, 2025:

  1. Gross profit is prohibited when the gross profit margin per unit exceeds the corresponding gross profit margin per unit before December 31, 2021, when it involves the sale of any product or service necessary for health, nutrition, living, transportation, heating, hot water production and consumer safety, as well as from the sale of school supplies and agricultural products and food, especially raw materials for the production of fertilizers, animal feed, raw cereals of all kinds, flour, sunflower vegetable oils.
  2. The “Household Basket” measure continues to apply, to control the prices of products necessary for the decent living of households.
  3. The obligation for traders to clearly declare to consumers when they carry out mark-ups on their products is extended.
  4. The measure in which super markets announce to the Ministry of Development retail prices of fruit and vegetable products at regular intervals is extended.
  5. The measure for rationalization and transparency of prices is extended according to which no promotional action is allowed for 3 months from the date on which a price increase is applied to a product.
  6. The measure to rationalize the prices of baby milk is extended.
