Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulidis officially welcomed the Presidential Palace in Nicosia, the Prime Minister of India Narendra Monti, who is paying an official visit to Cyprus yesterday.
Welcoming the Prime Minister of India, President Christodoulides said his visit was also reflecting the clear political will to further strengthen bilateral relations in multitude of sectors, from economy, trade, defense and security, technology, tourism.
“The joint statement we will adopt today for our partnership,” said N. Christodoulides “proves in practice the new page in bilateral relations between Cyprus and India and more generally at European and international level. Cyprus is a predictable and safe ally of India in an area of particular geostrategic importance such as the Eastern Mediterranean, the wider Middle East. At the same time it is an EU state that is India’s entry gateway to Europe and within the framework of the Cyprus Presidency of the EU Council to begin on January 1, 2026, we will work to further strengthen India’s strategic relations with the EU. “
The Cypriot president thanked N. Monti “for India’s timeless stance on the Cyprus issue and the attempt to end the Turkish occupation and reunite the island”. And N. Christodoulides continued: “At the same time I want to publicly express the support of the Republic of Cyprus in your efforts to deal with both international and cross -border terrorism. As a minimal indication of the importance we betray on your visit to Cyprus, the new page we open together in relation to the cooperation of our countries and at European and international level, I have a special honor on the part of the Republic of Cyprus and the Cypriot people, to honor you today with the Supreme District of the Republic of Cyprus. “
This was followed by the Paradise of the Prime Minister of India by the Cypriot president with the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III.
Accepting the honor, the Prime Minister of India said that “it is a recognition of our rich cultural heritage and philosophy of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,’ which means ‘the world is a family’. I humbly accept this badge on behalf of all Indians. I dedicate it to friendly relations between India and Cyprus, our common values and deep mutual respect and understanding. This emblem is a symbol of our unmistakable commitment to peace, security, sovereignty, territorial integrity and prosperity of our peoples. Except, I realize that this honor is a great responsibility for enhancing the bonds between India and Cyprus, and I will do it. I am sure that our cooperation will reach even higher levels in the future. And together we will not only work for national well -being and development, but we will continue to fight for world peace and security. Thank you very much”.
