The first bus in Greece “talking” about climate change and global warming is released on Kalamata For a few days now. This is an idea by the ambassador of the European climate, Nassos Makio, in collaboration with the Kalamata Urban Bus.
The bus “dressed” with stripes or heating lines shows an increase in average temperature per year, from 1860 to 2024. The shades of blue indicate colder years, while the deep red stripes, on the back of the bus, as well as its bright red color in the rear. Our planet in recent decades.
As Nassos Makios, physicist and ambassador of the European climate, the idea came from the graphic plan created by the professor at the English University of Reading, Ed Hawkins.
‘The bus selected As it is a medium that moves through the city, it sees a lot of people, so the message that passes could be spread to more and more people and immediately perceive the citizens, “he notes and adds that this simple graph was understandable by young children” to find out that we are still in the The temperature of the planet. “
The question as he points out is that everyone realizes that a sustainable development is needed that will satisfy our needs but in such a way without jeopardizing the needs of subsequent generations.
In this way, as he points out, it seems clear and characteristic in strong way how average global temperatures have risen over almost two centuries.
This bus will cross the city of Kalamata all summer and daily in order to make the message visible to the general public, enhancing the awareness and encouraging the debate on climate change.
At the same time, according to Mr Macus, the choice of Kalamata is not accidental as it is one of the 100 cities aimed at climate neutrality while stressing that the message in the urban bus has yet another particular symbolism, that public transport can help reduce the emissions of pollutants.
“We are implementing this project in a city trying to become climate neutral. Bodies and all citizens should cooperate and take such actions to highlight actions that lead us to climate neutrality. The term “climate neutrality” is a phrase that the citizen does not understand so easily so we want to simplify it and pass the message of the best quality of life respecting the environment.
The city’s urban transport helps essentially move to climate neutrality as we do not use our private cars to move within a city, achieving traffic congestion. So through the donation made by the Urban Bus, it is possible for every citizen to be informed of something so important, “says Makios.
As she points out, it also contributes to the education part of climate change, which, she explains, is a catalytic factor in raising public awareness. “Education from an early age, the cooperation of the stakeholders and the information, everything is a chain.”
Commenting that Kalamata is on the network of 100 climate neutral and smart cities, Mr Makios stresses that all interested parties concerned, namely organizations, bodies, civil society, business and “ordinary citizens” in this direction, is required.
“The goal is now to be able to adapt to climate change because its mitigation of its effects on our planet according to scientific data is quite difficult. Climate change is among the problems of course not only Greece but also of the whole world. Europe is making efforts, the question is what do other countries do outside our continent, such as the US, China, etc., “Mr Makios emphasizes.
Mr Makios, along with 76 Greeks and a total of 1,132 ambassadors and 50 partners in the European Union, have volunteered for information, training, promoting good practices and solutions for mitigation and/or adaptation to climate change and environmental protection.
