The Israeli prime minister called it a “historic day”. Benjamin Netanyahu the overthrow of the Syrian president Bashar al-Assadspeaking of a “historic day”, emphasizing that the blows inflicted by Israel on the supporters of Damascus, Iran and Hezbollah in Lebanon played an important role.
During a visit to an area near the border with Syria today Sunday (8.12.24) shortly after the Assad regime was toppled, Netanyahu said he had ordered the Israeli army to seize territory in the buffer zone to ensure security of Israel.
“We will not allow any hostile force to settle on our borders,” he stressed.
The Minister of Defence Israel Katz said the decision to deploy military forces in the UN-controlled buffer zone was taken to protect Israeli communities in the Golan Heights.
Speaking on television from the border with Syria, Katz said Israel is determined to protect these communities.
