Germany’s new finance minister downplays concerns over unrest in France

Its finance minister GermanyJörg Kukis, who succeeded the ousted Christian Lindner, played down financial markets’ worries about French political turmoil, saying investors appeared to be reacting in a “constructive” and “smooth” way to the ouster of its government of France.

“I am obviously in very regular dialogue and contact with my French colleague,” Kukis said today (6.12.2024) in an interview on Bloomberg TV from the German capital, “and the market reaction to the vote in the French parliament was very constructive,” he added, referring to what he said was a successful auction of France’s sovereign debt. “So the markets seem to be taking it calmly and constructively.”

French President Emmanuel Macron has vowed to stay in office until his five-year term expires in 2027, even after Marine Le Pen’s far-right party allied with left-wing lawmakers to topple his government yesterday (4.12.2024).
