After a period of particularly high temperatures and conditions reminiscent of June, Greece is preparing to welcome an organized barometric low that brings with it violent Weather. Thermal instability is expected to culminate from Sunday 25 May, with severe phenomena mainly in the mainland and especially at noon and afternoon.
Although the temperature in recent days had steadily rise, the return of instability is now a fact. According to the prognosis of National Meteorological Service (NMS), from Sunday morning the scene will change rapidly in the west, central and northern parts of the country, where rain and thunderstorms are expected that can be strong. As hours go by, the phenomena will gradually extend to the rest of the territory.
When will it rain in Athens
Attica will mainly be affected on Sunday and Monday. According to meteo.gr forecasts, rains are expected in the basin from noon on Sunday, which may continue until late at night. On Monday, new transient phenomena will occur mainly in the morning, and in the afternoon the weather will be gradually improved.
The winds will play a leading role in the evolution of bad weather. In the west and north they will blow from northern directions, reaching up to 7 beaufort in the Ionian Sea, while in the rest of the regions there will be southwesters with 4 to 6 beaufort. The meteorological scene will also be accompanied by a noticeable drop in temperatures – mainly in the north, where mercury may even drop by 10 degrees Celsius.
The meteorological phenomenon It is caused by the collision of the warm gas mass with a cold disorder from Central Europe, creating conditions of intense atmospheric instability and probability of hailstorms – mainly on the continents.
The weather on Saturday
On Saturday, May 24, the NMS predicts increased clouds in central and north with the possibility of local rain and sporadic thunderstorms in the Macedonian mountains in the afternoon, while in the rest of the country the weather will remain cloudy, with the presence of African dust. The winds will turn to east-northeast to the north and central, and southeast to the south, with tensions of up to 6 beaufort. The temperature will rise slightly, keeping the warm conditions for a while.
The weather on Sunday
Sunday, May 25th brings the main change, with local rains and rainstorms in the west and north and then across the country. Sporadic thunderstorms that will mainly occur on the continents may be accompanied by strong winds and hailstorms. The winds will turn to north-northwest, with intensity of 4 to 6 beaufort, reaching the Ionian Sea locally and 7. The temperature will drop significantly everywhere, except for the eastern island sections, where it will be maintained high.
The weather on Monday
Monday, May 26th will continue on the same pattern, with unstable weather and possible thunderstorms mainly in the east. Improvement is expected from the afternoon. The winds will blow west-northwestern 4 to 6 beaufort, while in the southern seas it is not excluded from reaching 7. The temperature will fall further, bringing more normal values for the season, ending-at least temporarily-in the mini summer.
