The presidency of Greece at the UN SA coincides with one of the most complex geopolitical periods of the last decades
Greece’s tenure as an elected member of the United Nations Security Council coincides with one of the most complex geopolitical periods of recent decades, according to a higher diplomatic source.
“It is a difficult time to be a member of the Security Council,” the source told RES-EIA, explaining that Greece is “a victim of its success to have very good relations and talk to everyone.”
For the Israel-Hamas conflict
Greece has been mobilized on “many levels” to provide large -scale emergency aid, while “the first priority is the immediate interruption of hostilities”. Regarding the EU debate on suspension of relations with Israel, the diplomatic source emphasized that “at the moment the relationship between relationships will not benefit” the peace plan. “Now is the time to build bridges,” he said, assuring that “accountability will exist on time and will be in line with international law.”
Greece has pioneered initiatives, such as the reception of injured children from Gaza. “We were one of the first countries to take the initiative,” the source said.
For the war in Ukraine
Greece supports Ukraine, making it clear that “we had an attacker and a defender” and “blatant violations of international law”. However, the source did not appear optimistic about the possibility of constant peace. A “short ceasefire” may be feasible, but “I am not optimistic about constant peace”. “I don’t see a mood of consultation,” he said.
For Turkey
The diplomatic source emphasized the importance of preserving the dialogue and reiterated the need to maintain a modus vivendi: “The daily tension of previous years, hostile rhetoric and equipment competitions would be catastrophic at the moment. Greece is seeking calm waters, without any concession to issues of sovereignty. ” New meetings on the positive agenda are expected, as well as a Supreme Cooperation Council in the coming months. In relation to equipment from the US and Germany to Turkey, he said that “we cannot prevent them, but we can emphasize the consequences and terms.” In any case, he noted, “Greece is not considered poor, we have very strong foundations.”
For the Greece-Cyprus-Israel electrical interconnection
“OR Electric interface will be done and not in slow time. The fundamental, in my opinion, is to be done in terms that will not shake our own security or international regional security, “the diplomatic source added.
For Cypriot
For the Cyprus issue, the diplomatic source said that the Secretary -General had set it as his “top priority” and replaced Maria Achela Olgin as his personal envoy because he is well aware of the issue. He noted that Greece had a very good cooperation with Mrs Olgin.
For sea security
Greece’s initiative to the Security Council on sea security was a great success. “80 states participated – a very high number,” the source noted. Maritime security is “at absolute peak” as it is linked to war tensions, supply chain, climate crisis and cyber security.
Greece, with the largest commercial fleet, “has a crucial role and this is recognized by everyone” added.
Syria
For Syria, the source said that “we must help Syria stand on its feet”. The EU has already proceeded with “reversible and conditional sanctions”.
Our country, he said, is in contact with Qatar and Saudi Arabia for the first phase of funding for reconstruction. “There are also Greek companies interested in being involved in rebuilding in Syria and we will be ready when the time comes,” the diplomatic source underlined. He added: “We are tuned to be ready as soon as commercial sanctions are lifted, especially banking.”
Greece, according to the same supreme diplomatic source, is “one of the few countries without open fronts and with the ability to talk to everyone”.
Greece’s approach focuses on the need to minimize the risk at a dangerous global context. “What we are interested in,” the source concluded, “it is in difficult times for our homeland to be as little as possible.”
