Under the chairmanship of the Greek Prime Minister Kyriakou Mitsotakisthe UN Security Council convenes at 17:00 (Greek time) Open High -level Discussion (Signature Event) on «Enhance marine security through international cooperation for global stability“, Which will take place at the headquarters of the International Organization, under the presidency of our country at the Security Council for May.
The UN Secretary -General will provide information. Antonio Guterreswhile the lady will participate as rapporteurs Melina TravlouPresident of the Union of Greek Shipowners and Professor of the University of Copenhagen and researcher at UNIDIR (United Nations Research Institute for Disarmament) Mr. Christian Boggerspecializing in international security issues.
The meeting is aimed at a strategic exchange of views between Member States for holistic treatment of increasing threats to sea security such as piracythe cross -border organized crimethe illegal arms movementdrug and people, the illegal fishingthe traffickingthe terrorist acts and attacks on critical marine infrastructure.
The need to strengthen international cooperation (including corporate relations) will also be emphasized in the surveillance of the maritime space with the aim of developing capacity and the use of new technologies, coordinating media and exchange of information. There will be references to risk management to coordinate actions to protect critical infrastructure, enhancing durability and timely measures. The consequences of climate change in sea security will also be highlighted and the environmental impacts of illegal actions will be evaluated.
Of particular importance is the full implementation of its relevant resolutions by all its Member States UN and respect for international obligations to combat marine threats.
The focus of the debate will also raise critical questions about the implementation of international legal frameworks such as the United Nations Convention on the Law of the UNCLOS sea, the priority of capacity to enhance needs and the role of technology in dealing with organized crime at sea.
