Where are we going?
Developments in the international arena are rapid. And worrying. The international system changes, with two main features to identify it. First, we are led to one if not de jure at least to a de facto border change. Second, the emerging international system will be a bipolar hybrid (US-China) with Tripoli characteristics (Russia). At the same time, important regional and local geopolitical players (eg India, Pakistan, Indonesia, Brazil, Iran, Turkey, Israel) are moving with increasing degrees of “freedom” than in the past.
Such combinations create an unstable, extreme competitive environment with huge opportunities and great dangers. We are in a period of history where the reviewing forces, small and large, seeing “opportunity windows” are trying to implement their ambitions.
What is the position of our homeland in this geopolitical “perfect storm”? What is the doctrine of foreign policy today? What does Greece ask for in a changing world?
Greece is on the sidelines. Absolutely absent. Hellenism is under pressure. On all fronts. We are receding or missing from everywhere. As if we have abandoned our national foreign policy, our national issues. Although we can take advantage of the circumstances, we do not. On the contrary!
Just days ago the prime minister visited Germany. The newly elected but deeply injured politically injured in his own homeland, Chancellor Mertz. Mertz, although Germany herself has accused Turkey for most of them, expressed his willingness to publicly “political cynicism” for EU-Turkey’s defense cooperation. In which Turkey, Germany provides, of course, with the “independent” equipment. In other words, Germany, as a predominantly EU member, is advocating Europe’s cooperation with a country that is not only out of Europe but also contrary to European politics, in a series of issues! As in Ukrainian …
And above all, it is calling for cooperation with Turkey that illegally owns 40% of the territory of another European country, Cyprus! And which, against every concept of international law, threatens another country, Greece, in the event of exercising our legal right, that is, the expansion of our territorial waters to 12 nm!
Instead of Greece to seize the opportunity and publicly reply to Germany that they are contrary to every concept of principles, moral and political logic, the Greek prime minister was sympathetic, simply asking for some new rules!
But that is not enough. When Chancellor Mertz, again publicly, called for Greece to accept the readmission of thousands of illegal immigrants from Germany, the prime minister expressed his “understanding” in the German problem! “Whatever you say” …
The prime minister also went to Italy. Italy also signed defensive agreements with Turkey a few weeks. And instead of Greece expressing its objections and doubts vigorously. Although Italy was in trouble after the involvement of the Italian Hellenic Train in the Tempe tragedy. And what was the result of the meeting? New trains, with the same company, for which the prime minister himself said in his statements that he would investigate any responsibilities …! “Whatever you say”, and in Italy …
In our neighborhood, the same and worse. The Skopje Prime Minister states in all international forums that the “Macedonian” has not been resolved, and that it will be set up from the outset to justify Skopje historical. It certainly implies the “justification” of the alienation of Skopje. And what do we do? We are watching dumb! “Whatever you say” And here …
Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, who illegally imprisoned Beleris, is persecuting the Greek minority. And he declares his unmistakable positions for the Chamides making his election campaign in Greece. And not only did anyone “annoy” him, but the Greek government is already at the forefront of Albania’s entry into the EU. “Whatever you say”, again …
The Energy Agreement of Greece-Cyprus-Israel was abandoned, “temporarily”. And we have reached the humiliation to sign an agreement between Cyprus and Israel, without even a word for our country! We are absent, not to disturb our “calm waters” and “friendship”, which we recently signed with Turkey … We also saw it in Kaso!
Tayyip Erdogan visited occupied Cyprus to inaugurate his “presidential” pseudo -state and stated that Turkey would never leave Cyprus. And Greece? The mother-mother, and a guarantor power, how did he respond to the challenge? It just didn’t answer! Because I do not think that an unsigned commentary “diplomatic circles” of the Foreign Ministry may be considered an answer of a serious country …
Absent from the Aegean, absentees from the Eastern Mediterranean. Not even the map for maritime spatial planning – which concerns only the EU – we dared to submit complete, something that Ankara exploits appropriately.
But absent from developments in Syria, instead of “camping” in Israel, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, India and the United Arab Emirates. And so we give the US margin to recognize Turkey as part of the solution to the Middle East …
Absent in the Cyprus issue. There is no initiative, no foreign policy, nothing at all. “Whatever you say”, everywhere and with everyone …
Obviously this is not a serious foreign policy. And shows a non -serious country. That no one takes it seriously.
After all, it looks like.
Because among all others we have achieved the impossible: not to talk to Russia but not with the new US administration …!
However, we do not “worry”. And we don’t deal with. Only “communication”.
But the problem is that no one is involved with us! They do not even invite us to discussions on issues related to our region and interests. Although Greece is geopolitical a very important area in the center of global developments. Does this contradiction not concern anyone “competent”?
We are the “absentees”. Except .. from the appearances in Turkey of the leadership of the Foreign Ministry. One, the minister of “let me call me and a bidder”, where he stands, praises Turkey and the Turks praise him. And the other, the new Deputy Minister, speaks at an official event in … Turkish!
Is this, the new doctrine of our foreign policy? “Whatever you say” and “calm water”?
Sorry, but who defined it and when? Who decided that our country will follow a policy of extreme soothing? Who has given his approval for the international absence and depreciation of our country? The House? The Greek people? Of course and not! Others said in 2023, pre -election.
This policy does not express the ideas and anxieties of the Greek people, overall!
And yet, such a mandate has never been given by the New Democracy’s electoral basis to the government.
But you will tell me, this is no longer a New Democracy government. It is a government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
