Southern Corfu: The mayor resigned at the expense of the unsolved problem of water scarcity

His resignation due to the inability to resolve the serious problem of water scarcity in southern Corfu was submitted by Mayor Vassilis Heimariotis to the responsible coordinator of the Decentralized Administration.

A few days ago, Vassilis Heimariotis had made known his intention to hand over his office, by letter to the citizens, “as an attitude of responsibility towards my fellow citizens and the duty I took on.”

Among other things he referred to delays and obstacles on the part of the government but also of unprofessional cooperation, locally.

He specifically stated that “despite the efforts, actions and claims, we have encountered delays and obstacles that go beyond the responsibilities and capabilities of the local government, with a tremendous proof of the Minister of Environment’s refusal to accept the mayor in order to inform him of the Municipal problems related to water scarcity».

Southern Corfu: Mayor’s letter

«Dear Congratulations and Dear Congrats,

“With the heart full of emotions and after deep and mature thought, I submitted my resignation from the post of the Mayor of South Corfu, which I notified to the responsible coordinator of the Decentralized Administration, in accordance with the law.

»My decision was not made slightly to the heart. On the contrary, it is a product of responsibility for my fellow citizens and the duty I took on. From the first day of my term, I have tried to serve our municipality with dignity, transparency and constant struggle to address the daily problems our society is experiencing – and in particular the serious problem of water scarcity.

“Despite the efforts, actions and claims, we have encountered delays and obstacles that go beyond the responsibilities and capabilities of the local government, with a tremendous proof of the Minister of Environment’s refusal to accept the mayor in order to inform him of the problems of the Municipality.

Also, the partnerships we expected at the local level did not have a similar response, which made it even more difficult to tackle problems.

I would like to thank the mayors of the Ionian Islands for their help, solidarity and their full support. Particularly for their clear and immediate placements against efforts to present the existence of funding available, at a time when no disbursement can be carried out due to lack of management competence in both municipalities and DEYAs.

“As has already been pointed out by the Waste, Energy and Water Regulatory Authority (RAAE), first legislation is required in order for the authorities to enable access to the necessary resources.

“I would also like to thank all the citizens of southern Corfu for their trust, patience, honesty and support. It was my honor to be mayor of this place. In closing, I would like to thank my partners in the municipality, the elected and the employees for their daily contribution and offer.

»I leave with the belief that I did my duty as best I could. The struggle continues and I will continue to be present, as an active citizen, next to the society I love and serve. “

The resignation of Vasilis Heimariotis, from the post of mayor, caused a wave of support from the local authorities of the Ionian Islands.
