With the Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology of United Arab Emirates Dr. Sultan al Jaber met today Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the Maximus Mansion.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis: First of all, Dr. Sultan, my dear friend, I’m really glad to welcome you to Athens again. You often visit her and I am very pleased to meet in the context of a very successful, as I understand, business forum and the interaction between very important companies that have traveled to visit us in Greece, the Greek authorities and the Greek business community.
I remember that a few years ago we set an ambitious goal, which was shaped in the context of a strategic economic relationship. And we set some goals on direct foreign investment from the United Arab Emirates in the Greek economy. We have achieved, if not, these goals. There have been very important investments in the energy and health sectors, among others.
I believe that the time has come to set even higher and more ambitious goals. We have arranged for this strategic partnership to work, it was not just a document signed, a statement of interest. I can tell you again the value I attribute to this strategic partnership, as extremely important to our country.
Greece has made rapid progress in recent years. We have better performance than many European countries. We have a stable economic environment. We offer opportunities in many different disciplines, as I am sure you know. And we are happy to build on this strategic partnership to further strengthen our cooperation.
I am also in a very pleasant position to announce that during your visit we have agreed to renew the avoidance of dual tax avoidance between Greece and the United Arab Emirates, for the benefit of many Greek professionals and companies based in the UAE.
Finally, I would also like to tell you, wearing my European “hat”, that I am particularly positive and optimistic about the possibility of signing, as soon as possible, of a free trade agreement between the European Union and the United Arab Emirates. This will be my personal priority, on the part of a country that, along with Cyprus, is essentially the closest to the UAE within the European family. Let’s make it a reality. I believe it will be for the benefit of both of our economies.

We now need to build on the success of this relationship and extend the field of this collaboration. As you heard on your very successful visit in February to Abu Dhabi, his highness, with which you met, was very clear in terms of his ambitions in this relationship, and how much he emphasizes the importance of expanding the field of implementation and nature. I am optimistic that with your help, with your guidance and I hope with the Free Trade Agreement, Greece and the UAE will be able to cultivate more compact opportunities, sufficient scale to supply the expansion of this very important relationship.
