Greece is turning a page in the field of transplants with interventions by the Ministry of Health and the EOM coordination, reported during an event organized by the Ministry of Health yesterday, under the scientific auspices of the Hellenic Transplantation Organization (EOM), in collaboration with the Onassis Cardiovascular Center.
By the end of the year, the inauguration of the Onassis Transplant Center will be inaugurated and soon an informative email from HIDA to all citizens will be sent and there will be a notice through the MyHEALTH app to register with the National Donor and Tissue Donor Register, announced by the Minister of Health.
“In 2024 it was a landmark year, as we have increased more than 60% on organ donors and more than doubled transplants compared to previous years. And already in 2025 everything shows that we are walking towards a new historic record, as 103 transplants have been carried out by April 15, “the minister said.
In a post on X, Mr. Georgiadis says he is proud of “what we have achieved on my term of transplants”. In 2024, 367 transplants were carried out in our country by deceased and live donors. More specifically they took place:
151 kidney transplants,
123 kidney transplants from living donors,
52 liver transplants, for the first time, 2 liver transplants from living donors,
23 heart transplants,
12 lung transplants,
2 double transplants of pancreas and kidney (also for the first time),
1 double transplantation of kidney and liver,
1 double transplantation of heart and lungs (for the first time in our country).
According to the minister, “the organ donation index for 2024 amounted to 10.6 donors per million population – a historic record for our country”.
Already in 2025, by April 15, 103 transplants have been carried out:
53 kidney transplants,
26 kidney transplants from living donors,
18 liver transplants,
4 heart transplants,
2 lung transplants.
“But behind every number there is a life story. A child who is back in his school yard, a father who hugs his children, a woman dreaming of tomorrow. And every life that is earned is a victory of love, offer and hope. This progress is not accidental. It is the result of a strategic political choice: Transplant activity is a national priority for the Ministry of Health and of course Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, ”Adonis Georgiadis emphasized and lists the interventions.

“We have strengthened the National Transplantation Organization (EOM) with 8 new Central Coordinators, we have created a network of local coordinators with 20 coordinators in donor hospitals, we train doctors and nursing staff through the” Organ Meetings “program implemented by the Foundation.
During yesterday’s event, the President of the Onassis Hospital Ioannis Bolettis emphasized, among other things: “The landscape of transplants has changed substantially over the last five years, as a result of the systematic cooperation of the Ministry of Health and the Hospital Officer, and transplant units. The new one of this five -year period is the support – and not only material – of all activities by the Onassis Foundation. Overcoming instrument donors over the last four years has been the best indicator of this progress but is still half of the average European donors. The effort continues. “
