The Giant Fast Fashion Shein increased in the US the prices of its products, from dresses to kitchen utensils in view of the forthcoming dictatorial In small parcels, in a first indication of the potential impacts of trade war on US consumers, Bloomberg said in a report.
E -commerce platforms such as Shein and Temu face 120% duties on many of their products due to the US government’s decision to end the “de minimis” exception for small packages from mainland China and Hong Kong.
Most of the increases in US prices took place on Friday (25.4.2025), with surcharges significantly higher in some categories than others, according to data gathered by Bloomberg News. The average price for the top 100 products in the beauty and health category increased by 51% from Thursday, with many of the products more than doubled their price. For products and games for home and kitchen, the average jump was over 30%, with the spearhead of a huge 377% increase in a 10 -piece kitchen set. For women’s clothing the increase was 8%.
Exporters have in recent years benefited from this exception, which allowed products worth less than $ 800 to enter the US without duties or customs duties. Washington will also increase the fee per postal item for goods entering May $ 100 to $ 100 and even higher after June 1st.
Only on April 21, Trump said in a post on social media that “there is almost no inflation” due to the decline in energy and food prices. But the increase in Shein’s prices reflects the latest efforts of Chinese online retailers to convey at least part of the additional costs of imports to US consumers.
In February, in order to seek coverage from Trump’s tariff policy, Shein has motivated some of its Chinese suppliers to create a production capacity in Vietnam. Temu wanted Chinese factories to send their own bulk products directly to the US warehouses, adopting what it called a “half guard” framework.
Temu and Shein saw sales recover in March and in early April, as US buyers stored everything, from makeup brushes to home appliances, before tariff prices began to rise, according to Bloomberg data. Both companies announced earlier this month that they will raise prices in the US.
In general, prices rose by about 10% for Shein in the US from April 24 to April 26, based on a sample of shopping basket complemented by Bloomberg News with 50 items from various categories. During this time, 7 of the 50 species of the sample were deleted from the US list. On the contrary, Shein’s prices in the United Kingdom remained mostly unchanged and no species were withdrawn from the list.
