Its control of Crimea by the Russia The US is preparing to recognize as a part of a broader peace deal between Moscow and Kiev.
According to Bloomberg, the recognition of Russia’s Crimea control by the US is the most recent indication that Donald Trump seeks in every way to achieve a ceasefire agreement. It is even coming as he and Foreign Minister Marko Rubio hinted on Friday (18.04.2025) that Washington is ready to abandon her mediating efforts if there is no progress soon.
Crimea was annexed by Russia in 2014, following a military invasion and a referendum under occupation. The international community has refused to recognize the annexation in order not to legalize the occupation of territories by force, which violates fundamental international treaties. Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski has repeatedly stated that he is not going to deliver even territory to Russia.
This move would be a huge diplomatic victory for Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has long been seeking international recognition of Russian sovereignty in Crimea. Putin has so far refused to agree with Trump’s proposal for a broad peace agreement.
Bloomberg sources have not yet been made a definitive decision by the US. The White House and the State Department have avoided commenting on the news. A US official who knows the negotiations, asked about the possibility of Crimea’s recognition, refused to comment on the details of the talks.
The United States presented proposals to their allies to allow a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine in Paris on Thursday, including a border of terms of ending hostilities and relaxing sanctions against Moscow in the event of a constant ceasefire.
The proposal will generally freeze the war at the forefront, with most other Ukrainian territories now held by Russia remaining virtually under Moscow control, sources said, while Kiev’s ambitions for NATO membership will also be out of debate.
