The park Buen Retro (Spanish: Parque del Buen Retiro) is one of Madrid’s most impressive attractions, which reaches 1.4 sq. Km.
The park is in the heart of the Spanish capital and is a favorite destination for both residents and visitors to the city, being an oasis of green with a multitude of marble monuments, statues, gardens and a magnificent lake.
The history of the park begins in the 17th century, when it served as a retreat for King Philip II and the subsequent royal families, and since the late 19th century it has been transformed into a public park, hosting numerous cultural events.
Visitors have the opportunity to rent small boats and take a relaxed stroll on the Estanque Grande del Buen Retiro on the backdrop of the imposing Alfonso IB.
The monument dominates the center of the lake and depicts the king riding a horse while surrounded by colonnades and marble sculptures, being one of the most photographed spots in the park.
Another striking attraction that stands out in the park is the Palacio de Cristal, built in 1887 for an exhibition of exotic plants from the Philippines. The glass and metal building is an architectural ornament and today hosts contemporary art exhibitions. The eyes also sprinkle the neoclassical building (Palacio de velázquez) with red bricks and impressive arches, which are decorated with colored tiles, which also functions as an exhibition space. This building is covered by iron domes and glass for the natural lighting of its interior.
Buen Retro Park is also known for its fairytale gardens (Jardines de Cecilio Rodríguez), with hundreds of flower varieties (roses) that offer a sense of serenity to walkers.
In addition to monuments and gardens, the park is an ideal place for leisure activities. Visitors can walk or bike on its wide trails, watch outdoor theatrical performances and concerts, or read a book. There is also an outdoor gym in the park for both young and older people, as well as many public sports venues and playgrounds.
Finally, from late May to early October, on Sunday noon, the Madrid Symphony Orchestra gives concerts on the Park.
