The president Donald Trump said he was investigating possible exceptions from duties which imposes on imported vehicles and spare parts to give automakers more time to install American production.
“I am considering something to help automakers. They are changing to spare parts that were manufactured in Canada, Mexico and other places and take some time because they will build them here, “Trump said today (14.4.2025). According to a Bloomberg report, the president’s comments could possibly relieve the automakers of his duties on car imports and light trucks.
The shares of General Motors, Ford Motor and its parent Chrysler Stellantis have high at the meeting after Trump’s comments, reversing previous falls.
Car import duties have threatened to raise prices for US consumers and causing chaos in car supply chains, which are deeply integrated into the US, Canada and Mexico. Trump has argued that duties are essential for the revitalization of American production.
Trump imposed a 25% duties on fully constructed vehicles, and the duties on the components will enter into force no later than May 3. Its duties for Canada and Mexico already contain an exception for vehicles with enough domestic content to meet the requirements of the existing North American trade agreement.
Trump’s frequent duties have sent confused messages to the markets, companies and commercial partners fighting with how to get involved with a White House that is committed to negotiating dozens of new agreements aimed at shrinking commercial imbalances.
“Look, I’m a very flexible person, I don’t change my mind, but I’m flexible,” Trump said. “I recently helped Tim Cook and all this business,” the president continued, referring to Apple’s chief executive. “I don’t want to hurt anyone. But the end result is to get to the place of greatness for our country. “
However, Trump marked over the weekend that relief for technology products would be short -lived, with himself and his associates saying that special duties will be imposed on these imports.
